Sheila Brown

Sheila Brown MSW RSW Acc. FM (OAFM) brings a unique combination of skills to her practice. Her approachable manner, combined with her experience in clinical and managerial positions, allows her to deal with many issues individuals, couples and families may be dealing with in their personal and professional lives. Sheila’s practice is focused on facilitating change and helping people to find the way forward through many different life transitions.

Sheila is a Registered Social Worker and Accredited Mediator with over 25 years experience. Sheila is an experienced therapist whose services include individual counselling and couple counselling. Sheila also provides specialized services to assist, families and children who are experiencing separation/divorce.

As an Accredited Mediator, Sheila works with separating parents to develop parenting plans to meet the varying needs of their children. Sheila will also help separating parents to talk to their children about separation and to restructure their communication and set new boundaries as they move forward in a more business like relationship as co-parents.

For separating couples who choose to work with collaborative lawyers, Sheila not only provides a cost-effective option to resolving the parenting issues, but can assist in facilitating the negotiation process itself. As a neutral facilitator Sheila helps both individuals to manage the understandable emotions that can interfere with their abilities to negotiate effectively and works with clients, their lawyers, and other team members to facilitate the resolution of the property and support issues in a respectful, non-adversarial process. As a Child Consultant Sheila can also meet with children, as necessary, to bring their voices into the process.

In addition to her clinical work, Sheila has provided training to collaborative professionals and is a leader in the Toronto area in developing interdisciplinary team practice to address the legal, financial, and emotional needs of clients going through a separation/divorce. Sheila also provides consultation to mediators and has trained collaborative professionals, in both Canada and the United States, who wish to enhance their skills using a team approach. Sheila is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Collaborative Law Federation and Collaborative Practice Toronto.

Together with a legal and financial professional, Sheila also offers early neutral information sessions to couples at the beginning of separation. For more information about The Neutral Zone, click here.
